Taking your pup on the boat? Make sure you are prepared! Some good ideas include: fitting your dog with a pet life vest, keeping an eye on them when they are on deck, and making sure they follow you below deck when you go down, especially if it's for the night.Dogs can swim, but not forever! They get tired just like the rest of us, and are affected by cold water the same way.Accidents do happen though, lucky for this dog she was pulled from the Pamlico Sound by the U.S. Coast Guard!www.outerbanksvoice.com/2022/05/15/coast-guard-rescues-mans-best-friend/ ... On this day in 1890 at about 6 a.m. the schooner Hattie S Clark of Gloucester, Massachusetts under Capt. Sargent Lane capsized in a storm off Frying Pan Shoals. the Captain and four of the crew members were lost. There were two survivors, Charles Parsons picked up that day, and Charles Polaski the ships cook found in a waterlogged dory. He was picked up by the passing steamer City of Macon from Savannah on the 16th at 11:20 a.m. The Hattie S. Clark was headed to Key West to pick up a load of pineapples, they had just delivered a previous load of fruit to New York and were returning for another.Image: 1887 chart of Frying Pan Shoals off Cape Fear. ... Fish Friday!About 122 years ago almost to the day, Congress signed an act for the establishment of a U.S. Fish Commission marine laboratory at Beaufort. This would be the second one created in the country. The first was established at Woods Hole, Massachusetts in 1885.Federal scientists had been studying marine species around the waters of Beaufort for some time before Congress officially approved of the deal, the researchers were based out of a rented space in a house on Front Street. A facility would eventually be built on Pivers Island and open in 1902. Interestingly, this is also where the Maritime Museum got it's start as it was the agencies intent to have a "fisheries museum" at their new facility on the island. Tourists visiting Beaufort could go to the laboratory and view marine specimens, both live and preserved. ... See MoreSee Less

On this day in 1919 the assistant keeper of the Croatan Shoal screw pile lighthouse, Christopher C. Midgett, rendered assistance to a disabled motor boat. Though the main responsibility of light keepers was to keep the light in the house going, maintain nearby beacons, and provide auditory warnings in poor visibility situations, they often assisted vessels that ran into trouble near their lighthouses. Most screw pile lighthouses of our internal waters were far from land and out of sight from U.S. Coast Guard Stations.Image of the Croatan Shoal light, U.S. Coast Guard archives. ...
