Be a part of the team

Find a home for your time and talents at the museum!

The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort has an array of intern opportunities for those who would like to be a part of our mission to collect, preserve, research, document and interpret the maritime history, culture, and environment of North Carolina.

Internships

Unpaid internships are available year-round for college students, recent graduates and graduate students in a variety of areas. Internships may be customized to meet the requirements of a particular program.  Student projects depend on academic requirements, student background and interests, and current work underway at the museum.

Collections

Stay tuned for information on available internships.

The position is a good fit for those who are interested in museum collections work and developing skills in collections care and management, object handling, curatorial research, database management, archival work, and exhibit development.

The focus of the internship is tailored to the goals of the student and the opportunities available within the Maritime Museum system. There is flexibility in scheduling, and the entirety of the internship will be conducted with guidance from professional museum staff. Collection interns will be based at the Beaufort location.

College students, recent graduates, graduate students, and nontraditional students are encouraged to apply. For information, contact Collections Registrar Allison Kohne.

Education

The Education Department is currently accepting applications for the summer of 2026.

The Education Department offers one eight-week internship each summer. The selected intern will support educational programs and daily operations under the guidance of the education staff. Primary responsibilities include assisting with our half-day Summer Science School classes, which explore topics such as sailors, fishing, model boats, and maritime archaeology.
Additional duties may include supporting museum-led on-site and outreach programs, community events, and field experiences.
This internship provides a stipend made possible through the support of The Friends of the Museum. It is an excellent opportunity for students pursuing degrees in education, history, biology, marine science, natural sciences, museum studies, cultural resources, and related fields.
While applicants from these areas of study are encouraged to apply, enrollment in a specific program is not required. A strong interest in the museum’s mission and a desire to engage and teach school-age children and general audiences in an informal learning environment are most important!

For more information, view the internship announcement or contact Associate Curator of Education Christine Brin at 252-504-7743.

Please note that most work for the Education Internship will be based out of the museum’s Watercraft Center, offsite for outreach programs, at the partner facility Bonehenge Whale Center, and in the field at various locations.

High School Internships

We currently do not have any openings for our summer High School Internship. Interested students are invited to apply to our general museum volunteer program.
