On this day in 1812 it was assumed that a crewman from Gunboat No. 7 was killed by a shark while swimming in the Cape Fear River off Smithville (modern day Southport). This would be the earliest shark fatality documented in North Carolina waters if proven true.At least six gun boats were stationed in the Wilmington area near Cape Fear to protect shipping and operations at coastal ports as well as conduct patrols. A party from the ship left to shore in a small boat for the purpose of bathing. When one of the swimmers sank during the dip and never surfaced fellow crewmen believed he was taken by a shark. Throughout the early part of the day a large shark had been spotted in the area. This portion of a map by Samuel Lewis dated 1802 shows the vicinity of the incident. ... See MoreSee Less

On this day in 1880 the Atlantic Hotel opened as a prominent coastal resort on the waterfront in Morehead City, offering a ball room, convention hall, tennis courts, swimming pool, bowling alleys and billiards. The main attractions were fishing, sailing, surf bathing, and of course the "cool sea air". The Atlantic Hotel was located between 3rd and 4th Streets downtown. It unfortunately burned in April of 1933.Image from a postcard of the Atlantic Hotel circa 1908 (source: UNC Chapel Hill Wilson Library archives). ... See MoreSee Less
