Wreck of the Schooner “Leading Breeze”

November 18, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Hybrid Hybrid Event
Free

Associate Education Curator Benjamin Wunderly will highlight the rescue of the captain and three crewmembers from the American schooner Leading Breeze. The vessel wrecked during a severe southeast gale at Ocracoke Inlet on Nov. 23, 1901. Barely holding on to the wreckage and all hopes lost, the shipwreck victims would witness a glorious sight, a crew from the United States Life-Saving Service coming out of the fog. Come learn about the particulars of this shipwreck and the heroic rescue performed by the U.S. Life-Saving Station crew from Portsmouth. The free program is part of the museum’s Maritime Heritage Series, informal lectures held in the museum’s auditorium and simulcast via Facebook and Zoom. Registration is not required for the in-person program.
