Man working on whale skeleton

Participate in a 40-60 minute walking tour of Bonehenge Whale Center, led by Natural Science Curator Keith Rittmaster and Associate Museum Curator Christine Brin. Keith has spent over 35 years studying marine mammals off the coast of North Carolina, focusing on bottlenose dolphins. His work with preparing marine mammal skeletons for educational display is as unique as the Whale Center itself.

The facility is more of a workshop than museum, open to the public only during select tour dates. Work conducted at Bonehenge Whale Center includes research on marine mammals, stranded specimen collection, skeletal rearticulation, education, and conservation of North Carolina whales (including dolphins and porpoise). Visitors will be able to observe the ongoing work of preparing marine mammal skeletons, learn about research on the habits of these animals, and view at least four completed skeletons that include two rarely seen deep-diving beaked whales.

The center operates as a partnership between the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and the Carolina Cay Maritime Foundation, registration fees will support ongoing projects at Bonehenge Whale Center.

Tour length – 40-60 minutes, 12-person limit, not recommended for children under 12 due to the workshop environment. Those 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Fee is $10 per person. Pre-registration required by noon the day prior. Register below or by calling (252) 504-7758.
